Hokkien is an analytic language. An analytic language is one that portrays grammatical relationships (eg. subject/object, tenses) through word order. The words themselves remain unchanged.

As English is an analytic language too, this is one aspect that will be easier to grasp for English speakers.

The typical sentence structure in Hokkien is Subject-Verb-Object (SVO).

eg. (in English) I eat cake.
