Lesson 5
Family Affair
阿爸 a-pē: father
阿母 a-má: mother
阿公 a-kong: grandfather
阿嬤a-má: grandmother
囝kiáⁿ: son
zha boh kiáⁿ: daughter
人 lâng: person, people (both plural and singular)
家己 ka-kī: oneself, yourself
ū: have
This lets us start making simple statements about family.
“I have…”
Use:
wa ū ...
For example:
wa ū a-pē.
I have a father.
wa ū a-má.
I have a mother.
The important structure is:
wa + ū + family member
Put it in practice!
A: Ler ho! Chiah pa buay? (Hi! Have you eaten yet?)
B: Chiah pa liao. Ler a-má ho bo? (I've eaten. How's your grandmother?)
A: Wa a-má ho-sè. Ler zha bo kiáⁿ hó bô? (My grandmother's doing well. How's your daughter?)
B: Wa bô zha bo kiáⁿ. Wa ū kiáⁿ. (I don't have a daughter. I have a son.)
A: Ah, apologies! (Ah, pai seh!)
